Mid Level Data Engineer
Join PensionBee as a Mid Level Software Engineer and help build user-friendly retirement tools. Collaborate, grow, and ship impactful features in a diverse, caring team.
Description
Retirement savings shouldn't be confusing. Founded in 2014 in London, PensionBee set out to change that , and we're now doing it on both sides of the Atlantic.
We're building a global leader in consumer retirement, helping customers in the UK and US bring their scattered savings into one simple online account they can manage from the palm of their hand. In the UK, that means consolidating pensions. In the US, it means helping people roll their 401(k)s into a new IRA, tackling the world's largest retirement market with the same straightforward approach that's already earned us an "Excellent" Trustpilot rating from thousands of customers.
Every PensionBee customer gets a personal account manager (a "BeeKeeper") in their corner, and their money is invested by some of the world's largest managers — including our US partner, State Street Global Advisors.
We're a public company that holds itself to a high bar, because our customers deserve peace of mind. Our team spans London, New York and Uruguay, with one shared focus: the customer.
PensionBee is listed on the London Stock Exchange (LON: PBEE) and has been named among the FT1000 Europe's 'Fastest Growing Companies'.
We are growing at scale and we need a mid-level Data Engineer to help build the data foundations behind our operations.
About the role
This is a standard data engineering role, building and maintaining the data pipelines and models behind PensionBee's automated regulatory reporting. You'll design, build, and maintain the pipelines that keep our data accurate, well-structured, and audit-ready — with firm external deadlines that put a bit more emphasis on data quality and documentation than a typical analytics-facing data engineering role.
This role is a great opportunity to join a team in its early stages, helping shape the way data processes are built from the ground up, while enjoying a balanced and inclusive culture.
Key responsibilities
Designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines , writing SQL, building ETL/ELT jobs, and integrating data from multiple internal systems into our data warehouse.
Owning data modelling for regulatory reports: making sure the underlying data is structured, accurate, and well documented, and keeping pipelines resilient as source systems change.
Building data-quality checks into pipelines as standard practice, so issues are caught automatically rather than discovered after the fact , applied here to data with firm deadlines.
Migrating some data processes off an older CRM-based system (Salesforce/Conga) onto our modern data stack, following an approach already used successfully elsewhere in the business.
Collaborating with the Product Development team on data/schema changes that affect this reporting, and with compliance colleagues on the business logic behind the numbers.
What you'll work on in your first few months
Early work is mostly foundational:
Getting familiar with the existing data pipelines and how current reports are generated.
Adding data-quality checks and monitoring to the most business-critical reports first.
Beginning the migration of processes off Salesforce/Conga onto our modern data stack.
No prior knowledge of UK pensions or financial regulation is needed to start , the domain-specific context is covered during onboarding, with support from the product manager and colleagues handling compliance/validation.
Technologies
Must have:
Strong SQL
A general-purpose programming language for pipeline work (e.g. Python)
Experience with a modern data warehouse (e.g. Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift)
Solid ETL/ELT and data modelling fundamentals
Nice to have:
Familiarity with our specific stack: Snowflake, DBT, Airbyte, Dagster, AWS
Experience with Salesforce or other CRM systems
Background in a regulated industry (finance, healthcare, etc.)
What We Offer
Hiring is a two-way process, and we want you to have as much information about us as we ask of you. Here's a bit about what joining PensionBee Uruguay looks like right now:
A team that's growing fast: PensionBee has had a presence in Uruguay for a year and a half. We started with around 4 people in engineering, and we're now hiring to reach around 20 people by the end of the year — across software engineering, customer success (which kicked off this year), and now this new data function.
A connected team: based in Montevideo, and collaborating closely with colleagues in London and New York.
A space to meet in person: our Uruguay team is based out of Sinergia Faro, and the team typically gets together there once a week — informal, not mandatory, but a nice rhythm for connecting face to face.
Compensation: salary plus a monthly stipend of $250 for team members based in Uruguay, to cover health and general wellbeing costs.
Requirements
The key skills required are:
Strong SQL and hands-on experience with a general-purpose programming language (e.g. Python).
Solid ETL/ELT and data modelling fundamentals, with experience owning a pipeline or data model end to end.
A minimum of ~2 years of relevant data engineering experience, including thinking through data quality and what happens when something breaks upstream.
Comfort with high autonomy and ownership — this is a new function of the team, building things up from a fairly early stage, so comfort defining process as well as executing it matters.
Strong stakeholder management skills, given the regular interface with Product Development, Compliance, and Risk colleagues based in the UK.
Clear, precise written and spoken English — documentation and audit-readiness are a core part of the role, not a nice-to-have.
Able to work effectively and empathically in a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with product managers, compliance colleagues, and other engineers.
A love of learning and personal development, alongside confidence with good data engineering practices and patterns.
Experience working for companies in Europe / US, directly or through a consulting firm, is a considerable plus.
No prior knowledge of pensions, UK financial regulation, or Salesforce is needed to start.
Working Model
Contract Type: Contractor
Remote role: Ideally based in Montevideo and open to coming into the office occasionally. Nothing mandatory, but we're building a culture where we value some in-person time together each week.
Hiring Process
Stage 1 - Resume screening
Stage 2 - People Interview: A conversation focused on general experience, soft skills, working style, and a space for you to ask all you need to make an informed decision about your next professional move.
Stage 3 - Technical Interview: A discussion of your technical experience and approach to data engineering problems.
Stage 4 - Technical Test: A practical assessment reviewed by the team.
Stage 5 - Team Technical Interview: A deeper technical conversation with members of the wider team.

Depending on the process, some of these stages may be shortened or combined , for example, the technical interview and the in-person meeting could take place together, in the same session.
Shortlisted candidates will have final decisions be made and unsuccessful candidates will receive feedback.
